MEMBERSHIP INFORMATION
Who can be a member?
Prerequisite: New Zealand Law Society Legal
Executive Certificate for all membership levels above Support.
If you have already attained the NZLS Legal Executive
Certificate you may apply for membership as an Affiliate or Associate
of the Institute. Click here to check
the appropriate level of membership for you.
Please note: New members cannot be admitted as Fellows.
Definition of Legal Executive
"Legal Executive"
means a person who:
- holds the NZLS Legal Executive Qualification or
has before 31 December 2000 been exempted by the Council from
holding it; or
- holds such other qualification as may be approved
by the Council from time to time; and
- is in full time Qualifying Employment; or
- at the discretion of the Council, is in part time
Qualifying Employment; and whose work involves the giving of advice
and the provision of services of a legal nature to clients that
enables her or his employer to charge fees for such advice provided
that this does not include a person employed solely as a secretary,
typist, clerk, search clerk, filing clerk, registration clerk,
trust accountant, office accountant, office manager or practice
manager;

of Qualifying Employment
"Qualifying Employment"
means employment by:
- a solicitor or solicitors; or
- a barrister or barristers; or
- the legal department of any company, firm, government
department, local or territorial authority, provided that the
legal executive is under the direct supervision of the barrister(s)
or solicitor(s) employed or retained by the company, firm, government
department, local or territorial authority;
Definition of Direct Supervision
As determined by Special General Meeting of
NZILE, held 18 March 2000, "direct supervision" is deemed
to mean "under the guidance of".
