The membership year is from 1 January - 31 December. Subscription invoices for the year are sent out in December of the previous year. The annual subscriptions are as follows:

Support $105.00
Affiliate $220.00
Associate $275.00

What happens when I apply to become a member?

The National Council considers applications for membership and membership upgrades at its monthly meetings. Once your application has been received and checked to be in order, you will be sent a letter confirming receipt and advising the date of the Council meeting at which it will be considered. Following the meeting you will be advised of the outcome and sent an invoice for your subscription for the remainder of the year.

When will my application for membership be considered by Council?

Council meets 10 time a year from February to November. Your application needs to be received by the 1st of the month for consideration that month.

What is a Registered Legal Executive?

Affiliates, Associates and Fellows of the Institute are entitled to call themselves Registered Legal Executives once their annual subscription has been paid and their Qualifying Employment Certificate has been signed by their supervising solicitor and returned to NZILE. An annual registration certificate is issued by the Institute. Registration denotes a level of experience and expertise that other people who call themselves legal executives may not have.

I'm a Support Member but I don't have a membership certificate

Membership Certificates are sent to new Affiliates, Associates and Fellows upon attaining that status. Membership certificate remain the property of the Institute (see Rule 8.11).

How do I upgrade my membership?

Check clause 8.3 of the Rules. If you meet the criteria of the next category then complete the Application for Membership and accompanying documentation and forward your application to the National Office, with your application fee of $22.50. Please ensure that you include a copy of your New Zealand Law Society Legal Executive Qualification, as without it, the Council is unable to consider you application. If you are already an Affiliate or Associate, please also include a copy of your Membership Certificate (NOT your annual registration certificate).

Why can't I join the Institute as a Fellow?

To be admitted as a Fellow of the Institute applicants are required to:

  • have the NZLS Legal Executive Qualification;
  • and have been in Qualifying Employment for a minimum of ten consecutive years immediately preceding the date of application to become a Fellow of the Institute;
  • and have been an Associate Member for a period of five consecutive years immediately preceding the date of application to become a Fellow of the Institute.
