Canterbury Westland Branch of The New Zealand Institute of
Legal Executives Incorporated was incorporated on 24th April
1991 and covers the geographical regions of the Hurunui, Waimakariri,
Selwyn, Christchurch, Banks Peninsula, Ashburton, Waimate,
Mackenzie, Timaru, Westland and Grey Districts.
Following Otago Branch going into recess in 2006, Otago members
are currently supported by Canterbury Westland Branch.
One of the principal objectives of Canterbury Westland Branch
is the promotion of the interests of Legal Executives and
in particular their unity as an important aspect of the legal
profession.
The Branch has a close relationship with Christchurch Polytechnic
Institute of Technology, particularly for the benefit of students
undertaking the New Zealand Law Society Legal Executive Course.
In recent years the Branch has provided a formal graduation
ceremony so that graduating Legal Executives are able to celebrate
the achievement of attaining the NZLS Legal Executive qualification
with their family members. Canterbury Westland Branch is grateful
for the support of the Canterbury District Law Society which
provides a cup for the top Canterbury Graduate.
The Branch has an active social programme that includes movie
evenings, dinners and social activities. Our members enjoy
being able to meet with fellow Legal Executives at these gatherings.
The Branch has a programme of continuing legal education
through lunchtime seminars held throughout the year. These
Seminars focus on subjects and topics that are current and

to our Branch members.

and focuses on local issues and information and also includes
legal articles of particular interest to Legal Executives.
Other than the Social, Education and Publicity Convenors,
the Branch Committee also comprises the following:
- A JobLink Convenor to liaise with Legal Executives and
prospective employers on job vacancies within the Branch
region;

liaising with NZILE on membership enquiries and to liaise

elected Committee for the 2007/2008 year:

Secretary: Bronwyn Lane
Treasurer: Lynne Cottrell

Membership: Lynne Cottrell
Education: Belinda Clark and Jo Thomson
Social: Belinda Clark and Christine Allison
We aim to promote Legal Executives in general. We have established
a very friendly and supportive environment for our members
with both social events and educational seminars. We hold
monthly lunch get-togethers,(one month in the city and the
other in Richmond) that provide an opportunity to our members
for an exchange of ideas and problem solving if required. We
look at this as a great networking opportunity as more and
more of our settlements are now being completed at the desk
rather than face to face. We offer a support group for students
of the Legal Executive Course, as all students in our area
must complete study by correspondence.
We publish a newsletter for our members on a quarterly basis
known as L.E. Law. This newsletter incorporates details of
upcoming events and happenings in our area and aims to provide
our members with information on impending changes in legislation
and procedural requirements.

Northland Branch of The New Zealand Institute of Legal Executives
covers from Wellsford north to Kaitaia and is the Institutes
newest Branch, having been incorporated in December 2003.
Northland committee members for 2007/2008 are:
President/Secretary: Vanassa McGoldrick - Ph: (09) 430 4350
Treasurer: Sally McLeod
Committee: Virginia Craig, Karla Kenwright, Carolyn McLeod,
Kylie Bowmar, Jo Kirby, Janet Telfer, Adrienne Newton
We are the smallest Branch of the Institute, with less than
30 members and have had little activity in the past year.
Part of our difficulties to date have been due to the wide
area that we span and the distances members have to travel
to join in meetings.
We have made a commitment to:
- Provide a two-monthly newsletter to keep members updated
with what is happening at a national level;
- Reintroduce seminars on topics of interest to members;
- Look at ways to raise our membership;
- Look at meeting at different locations to try and make
it as fair as possible to all members.

region.
The Waikato Branch provides a platform for legal executives
in the area to meet on a bi-monthly basis to socialise outside
the workplace and discuss current matters of interest.

covering a wide variety of subjects of interest to its members,

are arranged on a nibbles and drinks basis, culminating with
a dinner to wind up the year, usually in November.
